A review of unloading-induced fault instability

Induced seismicity associated with underground space creation and resource extraction has become a matter of global concern. However, our ability to predict mitigate anthropogenic geohazards is still woefully inadequate. This review provides an overview unloading-induced highlights the mechanisms behind fault instability from view rock mechanics. Based on numerous cases, reduction rotation in situ stresses pre-existing faults are possible causes excavation-induced seismicity. Fault during related many geological operational factors, including mining depth, pore pressure, stress distribution, production rate. Most these cases can be explained by Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion, some exceptional could offer us new clues improve understanding induced seismic events. The current challenges include how control remote triggering manage unseen threat undetected faults. Emerging technologies, such as data analytics machine learning, combining physical models next frontier for research.
